A 'Last Night of the Proms' without this march - unthinkable ! 'Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1' with its middle section, the hymn-like 'Land of Hope and Glory' by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), belongs to the finale of the London music event like the Radetzky March usually played as last piece to the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The fame and popularity of the other four military marches composed by Elgar between 1901 and 1907 fade in comparison to this secret national anthem of Great Britain (although strongly rivalled by 'Rule, Britannia ! '). It is, indeed, an equally rousing and catchy piece of music, and the catchy tune in the middle has just become a classical 'hit'. Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war ! - It is these words from Shakespeare's Othello that the probably best-known work by the English composer Sir Edward William Elgar falls back on : the five marches which are contained in Pomp and Circumstance Marches, op. 39. The work was a sensational success from the very beginning, especially March No. 1 should be going around in the head of every lover of classical music. At its premiere in 1901 under the composer's direction, the audience requested two repeats ; in 1902 the words of 'Land of Hope and Glory' were added to the march at the request of Edward VII for his coronation ceremonial. The resulting version is now performed every year at the Last Night of the Proms and as English hymn at the Commonwealth Games. Motivated by the success of the first two marches, Elgar composed another three which were performed in 1905, 1907 and 1930. Mostly remembered for his great compositions, during his life Edward Elgar was also a violin teacher. These six short studies, presented in a progressive order of didactic difficulty, are, despite their simplicity, very musical. They can be played in the first position, but require the knowledge of all fingering patterns. The compositions are set in C major, A minor and G major with occasional modulations. They are ideal practice-pieces to encourage confident reading and playing in various (and often neglected) fingering patterns. At the same time, they promote the understanding of different metres and characters. Edward Elgar wrote great symphonic works for solo instruments with orchestral accompaniment, but also chamber music works and occasional works, especially for the violin : for example 'Salut d'amour' or 'Chant de nuit'. This series also includes 'La Capricieuse' composed in 1891. The trained violinist Elgar knew how to write a capricious, or even 'petulant' music piece which lives up to the name of 'Capricieuse'. Although the charming miniature cannot compete with the popularity of 'Pomp and Circumstance', one can hardly imagine a more fitting setting for this great virtuosic piece than as an encore piece after a challenging concert evening.
