Despite the work's history, Clara Schumann herself began to associate this piece with her husband's impending madness which subsequently led to the composer's self-imprisonment in Dr. Franz Richarz's Endenich sanatorium, Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 3 in A minor stands out as a unique piece of music by the romantic composer. 'You were often on my mind when I was writing', wrote Robert Schumann to Joseph Joachim who had encouraged him to write this concerto. In view of Schumann's illness, however, Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will, Joachim prohibited the ? rst performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann's death in 1956. After detailed editorial work, the premiere was brought forward to 1937. The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann's Geistervariationen ('Ghost Variations'), the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version of Schumann's solo part saw in this piece 'the bridge between Beethoven's and Brahms' concertos'. With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces. Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann, Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms, the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms' Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces. Urtext Primo - ein neues Konzept für den Einstieg Vol. 4

Schumann's early piano quartet composed in 1829 has not yet found its way into the concert repertoire, although it would be well-earned. This is due to the fact that the work has only been available in a version full of mistakes up to now. Our new edition by the renowned Schumann researcher Joachim Draheim is based not only on the autograph but also on Schumann's sketches, thus providing a convincing musical text for the first time. Missing pages of the autograph (end of the first movement, left-hand piano part in the minuet, etc.) have been completed for the first time with the help of parallel passages in a stylistically sensitive and accurate manner. Lettres d'amour

Two things in particular link Aribert Reimann with Robert Schumann, whom he much admires : their interest in the dark side of human existence and their great commitment to literature. The both took an interest in the poems by the Scottish queen Mary Stuart written at the end of her life during her imprisonment. For a long time, Reimann had cherished the wish to orchestrate the lieder by Schumann based on these poems, 'but I always lacked in courage [... ] to break up the rather barren piano part which is formally self-contained and complete in itself'. But while working on Sieben Fragmente für Orchester in 1988, he decided to take the risk. And although Schumann's music is never really touched, Reimann succeeds in bringing the deeply moving expression of the lieder even closer to the listener. Robert Schumann's Album für die Jugend ('Album for the Young') was written in 1848 as a Christmas present for his children and was originally entitled Weihnachtsalbum für Kinder, die gern Clavier spielen ('Christmas Album, for children who like to play the piano'). The 43 pieces combine pedagogic aims with artistic quality, a rare combination in the musical repertoire.
