In the flattest and least agreeable part of the county of Essex, about five miles from the sea, is situated a village or small town, which may be known in these pages by the name of Longfield. Although only fifty miles from London, few among them have ever seen the metropolis. Some claim that distinction from having visited cousins in Lothbury and viewed the lions in the tower. Frankenstein ou le Prométhée moderne est un roman épistolaire publié anonymement le 1 janvier 1818 par Mary Shelley, et traduit pour la première fois en français par Jules Saladin, en 1821.

Victor Frankenstein, scientifique genevois, est recueilli sur la banquise par un équipage faisant route vers le Pôle Nord. Très tourmenté, il livre son histoire au capitaine du bateau : quelque temps auparavant, il est parvenu à donner la vie à une créature surhumaine.

Passionné par les sciences occultes, Victor Frankenstein est persuadé qu'il peut donner la vie. Dans la solitude de son laboratoire, un soir d'orage, son rêve devient réalité... et tourne au cauchemar. Il vient de créer un être monstrueux. Victor fuit, épouvanté. Mais il est trop tard : la créature, rejetée de tous, prépare déjà sa vengeance. "La foudre frappa. Ma bougie vacilla, lorsque tout à coup, ou milieu de cette lumière hésitante, je vis s'ouvrir l'oeil jaune et stupide de ma créature. Elle se mit à respirer profondément et des mouvements compulsifs agitèrent ses membres".

Le récit du séjour passé en Suisse par la future romancière et le poète. Ecrit à quatre mains, le texte évoque leurs excursions en compagnie de Byron ou à Chamonix, à la recherche des sommets. Il interroge constamment le lien entre réalité et invention.
