Le Hobbit est le premier récit publié par J.R.R. Tolkien, en 1937. Inventée pour ses enfants, cette histoire raconte les aventures de Bilbo, lancé en quête d'un trésor gardé par un dragon, en compagnie de Nains et du magicien Gandalf. Bien que destiné initialement à la jeunesse, ce texte a également enchanté des générations de lecteurs adultes. L'un des intérêts du Hobbit est qu'il introduit le lecteur dans monde inventé par Tolkien (la Terre du Milieu), décor de la plupart de ses récits, et qu'il présente des personnages appelés à connaître une grande postérité, dont les Hobbits, Gandalf et. l'Anneau.
Cette édition est un beau livre, en raison du nombre élevé d'illustrations : photographies de Tolkien et de sa famille, reproductions de manuscrits et de cartes, magnifique cahier d'illustrations. cette dimension attirera d'autres types de lecteurs et de curieux, qui vont découvrir le texte par l'adaptation cinématographique de P. Jackson - en deux volets, 2012 et 2013. Ce livre aurait donc pu paraître sous le titre « Le Hobbit illustré », mais Christian Bourgois Éditeur publie déjà des éditions illustrées du Hobbit par Alan Lee, ce qui a conduit à conserver le titre anglais - Le Hobbit annoté.
Il ne s'agit pas pour autant d'une édition savante : l'introduction et les notes de Douglas Anderson apportent surtout un éclairage sur des passages du texte, et les mettent en relation avec des épisodes de la vie de l'auteur. Le texte de Tolkien demeure bien central. Par rapport aux autres éditions du Hobbit (ou de Bilbo le Hobbit) en français, cette édition comporte une particularité supplémentaire, et décisive.
Réalisée à partir de l'édition anglaise corrigée du texte de Tolkien (débarrassé de nombreuses coquilles en 1995), cette traduction du Hobbit annoté comporte, surtout, une nouvelle traduction (depuis longtemps attendue !) du Hobbit. Cette traduction inédite respecte les particularités du texte : son jeu avec les registres (du plus léger, au début du récit, vers des moments plus sombres, annonçant Le Seigneur des Anneaux qui prendra sa suite), la musicalité des chansons et poèmes ; mais, plus généralement, la traduction est débarrassée de toute lourdeur, et retrouve le dynamisme et l'entrain du texte anglais.
Ce livre sera une redécouverte pour de nombreux lecteurs de Tolkien. On peut ajouter une remarque particulière sur les noms : les lecteurs qui apprécient Tolkien - le succès des Enfants de Húrin en 2008 a montré leur intérêt, sans parler même de la sortie du film de P. Jackson - seront heureux de découvrir que les noms anglais ont été retraduits en respectant les indications données par Tolkien dans le Guide to the Names, et en cohérence avec les volumes suivants dont Daniel Lauzon a assuré la traduction.
Daniel Lauzon est en effet un traducteur reconnu des oeuvres de J.R.R. Tolkien : les premiers volumes ont paru en 2006, mais son travail avec V. Ferré remonte à l'année 2000, pour les premières réalisations.
