In the course of the last few years scholars have devoted to it profound researches and elaborate publications. Greek manuscripts, which had remained a sealed book at a time when the quest for unpublished documents is all the rage, have now been laboriously examined, and the wealth of this literature has exceeded all expectation. On the other hand, the deciphering of the cuneiform tablets has given access to the wellsprings of a learned superstition, which up to modern times has exercised over Asia and Europe a wider dominion than any religion has ever achieved. I trust, therefore, that I am not guilty of undue presumption in venturing to claim your interest for this erroneous belief, so long universally accepted, which exercised an endless influence on the creeds and the ideas of the most diverse peoples, and which for that very reason necessarily demands the attention of historians.

Astrology and Religion Among the Greeks and Romans

Le belge Franz Cumont (1868 - 1947) a bouleversé l'histoire des religions en y intégrant ce que l'on rattachait alors à l'histoire des sciences : l'étude des mouvements des étoiles, ou zodiaque. Son texte « Zodiacus » forme une synthèse magistrale sur l'origine de la pratique astrologique. Décrivant les éléments proprement astronomiques en jeu (constellations, course des planètes, phénomène de la précession des équinoxes) et son origine babylonienne, Cumont retrace d'abord les voies de transmission et l'évolution du zodiaque en Orient (Syrie), en Égypte, en Grèce, à Rome.

Les Recherches sur le symbolisme funéraire des Romains peuvent être considérées comme le pendant romain de l'admirable Psyche d'Erwin Rohde. Parues en pleine guerre, en 1942, elles visent à retrouver au front de certains sarcophages mythologiques et dans le décor de certaines stèles un écho des théories philosophiques relatives à l'immortalité de l'âme et à son ascension dans les sphères célestes, une fois débarrassée de son enveloppe charnelle. Ces théories, qui avaient fait l'objet de quelques-uns de premiers travaux de Cumont (Le mysticisme astral dans l'Antiquité, 1909) et d'un premier livre, Afterlife in Roman Paganism (1922), le retiendront encore dans sa dernière oeuvre, Lux perpetua, parue en 1949, deux ans après sa mort et rééditée dans cette même collection en 2010. Précédées par une très riche mise en perspective de la part de Janine et Jean-Charles Balty, les Recherches surie symbolisme funéraire des Romains, longuement mûries par Cumont mais parfois âprement débattues de nos jours, demeurent une somme incontournable pour l'exégèse de nombre de monuments funéraires d'époque romaine.
