Le livre X des HIstoires de Polybe couvre les annees 210/208, moment de la naissance de l'auteur et instant historique essentiel, celui de l'emergence politique et militaire de deux hommes a la destinee exemplaire: Scipion a Rome, Philopoemen en Achaie . Plus que jamais, c'est l'occasion pour Polybe de polemiquer contre les autres historiens en montrant ce qu'est une histoire rationnelle, scientifique, qui ne laisse place ni a la fortune ni au hasard; et de faire oeuvre didactique, en tracant le portrait du bon chef, celui qui detient le savoir et assure la securite de ses hommes et donc, de sa cite. Par ailleurs, phenomene rarissime, Polybe se livre, en revelant des elements de sa biographie et des aspects de sa sensibilite . L'annotation est volontairement reduite au minimum indispensable.
