At the eastern end of the Wakhan Corridor, in Afghanistan, is a desert territory isolated from everything, the starting point of the highest mountain ranges in the world: the Pamir Plateau. At more than 4,200 meters above sea level, some 1,150 Kyrgyz live there timeless, trapped by the vagaries of history. Traveling through this region of the heart of Upper Asia, the photographer Matthieu Paley and his wife Mareille meet for the first time in the year 2000 the caravans of these proud nomads and their grand chief, the Khan. Whereas since 1972 no Westerner had ventured up the frozen Wakhan River, Matthieu Paley visited them three times in the middle of winter.Pictures of Pamir. Forgotten on the roof of the world reveals us a world rarely photographed and testify to the singular life, rough and fascinating, of a people attached to their land, against all odds.
