The story had held us, round the fire, sufficiently breathless, but except the obvious remark that it was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in an old house, a strange tale should essentially be, I remember no comment uttered till somebody happened to say that it was the only case he had met in which such a visitation had fallen on a child. The case, I may mention, was that of an apparition in just such an old house as had gathered us for the occasion-an appearance, of a dreadful kind, to a little boy sleeping in the room with his mother and waking her up in the terror of it; waking her not to dissipate his dread and soothe him to sleep again, but to encounter also, herself, before she had succeeded in doing so, the same sight that had shaken him. It was this observation that drew from Douglas-not immediately, but later in the evening-a reply that had the interesting consequence to which I call attention. Someone else told a story not particularly effective, which I saw he was not following. This I took for a sign that he had himself something to produce and that we should only have to wait. We waited in fact till two nights later; but that same evening, before we scattered, he brought out what was in his mind.

Explorant à la perfection les cheminements imperceptibles des êtres, la complexité mouvante de leur conscience, de leurs secrets, james prétendait avoir écrit "cette romance légère d'une plume facile" et que "la forme seule sauve l'oeuvre d'art". plonger dans les histoires de celui que virginia woolf qualifiait de "vieux gentleman courtois, raffiné, sentimental", c'est plonger dans tout un univers intellectuel et affectif dont cette nouvelle est un échantillon exemplaire.

Dix-huit ans est-il, comme l'a chanté le poète, l'âge idéal ou, comme le montre Henry James, l'âge difficile ?
Nanda Brokenhamm fait son entrée dans le monde en même temps que dans le « salon » de sa mère. Cette dernière, séduisante, intelligente et égoïste, s'emploie à trouver à sa fille l'indispensable mari. Mais sa liberté de vie et de langage fait de l'ombre à la jeune femme autour de laquelle les intrigues se nouent et se dénouent.
Ni tout à fait enfant, ni tout à fait adulte, Nanda emprunte les sentiers de l'âge difficile pour déjouer les roueries et les guets-apens que lui réserve le monde.

L'âge difficile

Né Américain mais habitué dès son plus jeune âge à de longs séjours sur le Vieux Continent, Henry James a oscillé toute sa vie entre sa " yankeetude inexorable " et sa fascination pour les mœurs et la culture des Européens. Il choisit la citoyenneté britannique en 1915, un an avant sa mort.
Les lettres, très largement inédites en français, que Laurent Bury a choisies au cœur de son abondante correspondance pour composer ce recueil, reflètent les émotions de James voyageur, ses enthousiasmes et ses désarrois, ses rencontres et ses découvertes, avec une vigueur et une spontanéité qui disparaissent le plus souvent de ses textes de fiction, plus policés. A travers ses ambivalences et ses contradictions, on y lit, comme l'explique Evelyne Labbé dans son éclairante préface, " une tension intime entre son besoin profond d'assimilation et celui, non moins vital, de détachement et de défamiliarisation ". Ainsi, James passe constamment du désir de voyager à celui de se fixer. S'il lui faut " imbiber [son] éponge intellectuelle " en accumulant un capital d'impressions et de sensations nouvelles, il vit et voyage en quelque sorte " au futur antérieur ", anticipant déjà ce que le souvenir fera de cette réalité afin que l'œuvre advienne. Car, pour James, " c'est l'art qui fait la vie, l'intérêt, l'essentiel ".
Les illustrations de ce livre sont empruntées au photographe américain Alvin Langdon Coburn. Certaines avaient été choisies par James lui-même pour figurer en frontispice de l'édition américaine de ses œuvres en vingt-cinq volumes.

D'un continent l'autre - Occasion

'She will do as I have bidden her.'    Catherine Sloper is heiress to a fortune and the social eminence associated with Washington Square.  She attracts the attention of a good-looking but penniless young man, Morris Townsend.  His suit is encouraged by Catherine's romantically-minded aunt, Mrs Penniman, but her father, a clever physician, is convinced that his motives are merely mercenary.  He will not consent to the marriage, regardless of the cost to his daughter.  Out of this classic confrontation Henry James fashioned one of  his most deftly searching shorter fictions.  First published in 1880 but set some forty years earlier in a pre-Civil War New York, the novel reflects ironically on the restricted world in which its heroine is marooned, seating herself at its close 'for life, as it were'.    In his introduction Adrian Poole reflects on the book's gestation and influences, the significance of place, and the insight with which the four prinicipal players are drawn. The edition includes an account of the real-life tale that sparked James's imaginative genius.

Washington Square

At the little town of Vevey, in Switzerland, there is a particularly comfortable hotel. There are, indeed, many hotels, for the entertainment of tourists is the business of the place, which, as many travelers will remember, is seated upon the edge of a remarkably blue lake-a lake that it behooves every tourist to visit. The shore of the lake presents an unbroken array of establishments of this order, of every category, from the "grand hotel" of the newest fashion, with a chalk-white front, a hundred balconies, and a dozen flags flying from its roof, to the little Swiss pension of an elder day, with its name inscribed in German-looking lettering upon a pink or yellow wall and an awkward summerhouse in the angle of the garden. One of the hotels at Vevey, however, is famous, even classical, being distinguished from many of its upstart neighbors by an air both of luxury and of maturity. In this region, in the month of June, American travelers are extremely numerous; it may be said, indeed, that Vevey assumes at this period some of the characteristics of an American watering place. There are sights and sounds which evoke a vision, an echo, of Newport and Saratoga.

Daisy Miller: A Study

Venise à la fin du XIXe siècle. Un critique littéraire américain, prêt à tout pour mettre la main sur des papiers personnels inédits du grand poète romantique Jeffrey Aspern, son compatriote, s'introduit comme locataire chez Juliana Bordereau, qui fut soixante ans plus tôt la muse et l'amante de l'écrivain. La vieille dame, qui vit recluse avec sa nièce, Tita, résiste obstinément aux manoeuvres du narrateur : l'argent, la galanterie, l'effraction, tout échoue. Lorsqu'elle meurt enfin, c'est à Tita que reviennent les papiers tant désirés. Le héros acceptera-t-il le prix très particulier qu'elle lui en demande ?
La splendeur d'un été sur la lagune, le pittoresque d'un palais en ruine où refleurit un jardin oublié, la passion qu'on peut vouer à l'oeuvre d'un poète, la renaissance trop tardive d'une vieille petite fille devenue toute-puissante, sa vengeance, telles sont les séductions visibles de ce classique de Henry James. Sous la brillante surface, les dialogues contenus, se dessine aussi une réflexion ambiguë sur l'écriture, se cache un piège où chaque lecteur découvrira son propre reflet.
