Totem et tabou

The medical profession is justly conservative. Human life should not be considered as the proper material for wild experiments.

Conservatism, however, is too often a welcome excuse for lazy minds, loath to adapt themselves to fast changing conditions.

Remember the scornful reception which first was accorded to Freud's discoveries in the domain of the unconscious.

When after years of patient observations, he finally decided to appear before medical bodies to tell them modestly of some facts which always recurred in his dream and his patients' dreams, he was first laughed at and then avoided as a crank.

The words "dream interpretation" were and still are indeed fraught with unpleasant, unscientific associations. They remind one of all sorts of childish, superstitious notions, which make up the thread and woof of dream books, read by none but the ignorant and the primitive.

The wealth of detail, the infinite care never to let anything pass unexplained, with which he presented to the public the result of his investigations, are impressing more and more serious-minded scientists, but the examination of his evidential data demands arduous work and presupposes an absolutely open mind.

This is why we still encounter men, totally unfamiliar with Freud's writings, men who were not even interested enough in the subject to attempt an interpretation of their dreams or their patients' dreams, deriding Freud's theories and combatting them with the help of statements which he never made.

Dream Psychology

Mémoire et répétition : ce nouveau recueil de Freud traite de deux thèmes centraux à la psychanalyse. Pourquoi répétons-nous toujours les mêmes erreurs, les mêmes actes ? Comment cette même compulsion à la répétition peut-elle nous permettre de sortir de ce cercle vicieux qu'elle semble pourtant dessiner ? Ce recueil complète Anna O. et contient notamment le célèbre essai « Remémoration, répétition, perlaboration » (1914), ainsi que « Sur les souvenirs-écrans » (1899) et « Note sur le "bloc magique" » (1925).

La Répétition

Freud's discovery that the dream is the means by which the unconscious can be explored is undoubtedly the most revolutionary step forward in the entire history of psychology. Dreams, according to his theory, represent the hidden fulfillment of our unconscious wishes.

L'interprétation des rêves

A l'été 1919, Freud publie cet essai sur la genèse du masochisme, où il emmène son lecteur aux origines d'un fantasme étrange, dans un monde incestueux où le père est certain, où la mère n'a pas sa place, et où les enfants ne veulent partager aucun amour parental. Le refoulement a-t-il un sexe ? Pourquoi les enfants battus sont-ils le plus souvent des garçons ? Et pourquoi cela excite-t-il les filles ? "Un enfant est battu" fait le pont entre les perversions étudiées dans les Trois essais sur la théorie sexuelle et la pulsion de mort théorisée en 1920 dans Au-delà du principe de plaisir. Lacan ne s'y trompera pas, qui en louera l'audace pionnière et la puissance.

Le 21 décembre 1914, Freud écrit qu'il prépare « une théorie de la névrose avec des chapitres sur les destins de pulsions, le refoulement et l'inconscient ». Il commence en mars 1915 à composer ces trois essais qu'il présente, dans la lettre du 1er avril à Lou Andreas-Salomé, comme « une sorte de synthèse psychologique de ses conceptions antérieures ». La rédaction est achevée le 4 mai, en même temps que celle du Complément métapsychologique à la doctrine du rêve et de Deuil et mélancolie.Ces essais seront rassemblés en 1924 sous le titre Métapsychologie, dans le volume V des Gesammelte Schriften.

Métapsychologie

In what remains one of his most seminal papers, Freud considers the incompatibility of civilisation and individual happiness, and the tensions between the claims of society and the individual. We all know that living in civilised groups means sacrificing a degree of personal interest, but couldn't you argue that it in fact creates the conditions for our happiness? Freud explores the arguments and counter-arguments surrounding this proposition, focusing on what he perceives to be one of society's greatest dangers; 'civilised' sexual morality. After all, doesn't repression of sexuality deeply affect people and compromise their chances of happiness?

Civilization and its discontents

In 1909 Freud delivered five lectures at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He spoke on the foundations of psychoanalysis, and the lectures were published the following year. Until the far more extensive Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis, Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis was the authoritative summary of Freud's ideas, and it remains a lucid general introduction.
