The sixties were a time of restlessness, inner turmoil, and exuberance for Merton during which he closely followed the careening development of political and social activism - Martin Luther King, Jr., and the March on Selma, the Catholic Worker Movement, the Vietnam war, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Volume 5 chronicles the approach of Merton's fiftieth birthday and marks his move to Mount Olivet, his hermitage at the Abbey of Gethsemani, where he was finally able to fully embrace the joys and challenges of solitary life: 'In the hermitage, one must pray of go to seed. Au moment où l'humanité s'interroge sur son destin et où l'eglise se cherche de nouvelles formes d'adaptation à un monde en complète transformation, thomas merton a voulu rappeler aux chrétiens comme aux non-chrétiens que l'avenir de l'homme ne se situe pas seulement au niveau du social mais également du spirituel. aussi lui paraissait-il impératif d'aller au plus profond de notre être essentiel pour retrouver ce qui, en nous, appartient à l'éternel. pour y parvenir il s'était tourné depuis longtemps vers les traditions religieuses de l'asie, notamment le bouddhisme et le taoïsme. il eut une intuition géniale de leur originalité dont témoignent les études que nous publions dans zen, tao et nirvâna.

Thomas merton méditait depuis bon nombre d'années sur les doctrines asiatiques et il est un des rares chrétiens qui ait compris le sens réel du métaphysique en orient, expérience vécue et non spéculation sur des principes mis au service de la religion. mort prématurément, il n'a pu accomplir la tâche que l'on attendait de lui. il nous montre cependant la voie vers laquelle doit s'effectuer la confrontation avec les traditions non chrétiennes pour parvenir au véritable oecuménisme, celui des âmes et des coeurs que beaucoup appellent ardemment de leurs voeux. de plus, il pensait que le renouveau de l'eglise ne se fera qu'au contact vivant avec ces traditions qui seules peut-être seront capables de faire naître une nouvelle conscience chrétienne dont il esquisse les contours dans un essai capital au début du livre.

De nationalité américaine, thomas merton est né le 31 janvier 1915 à prades, dans les pyrénées orientales, où ses parents étaient venus s'installer.
Il entreprit ses études à montauban au lycée ingres et les poursuivit à cambridge avant de les terminer à l'université columbia de new york où il était rentré en 1935.
1938 marque sa conversion au catholicisme et thomas merton entre bientôt à la trappe au couvent de notre-dame de gethsémani dans le kentucky. il devait mourir accidentellement à bangkok le 11 décembre 1968. thomas merton à la demande de ses supérieurs écrivit de nombreux livres, parmi lesquels le récit de sa conversion connut en france un grand succès sous le titre " la nuit privée d'étoiles ".
