The sixties were a time of restlessness, inner turmoil, and exuberance for Merton during which he closely followed the careening development of political and social activism - Martin Luther King, Jr., and the March on Selma, the Catholic Worker Movement, the Vietnam war, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Volume 5 chronicles the approach of Merton's fiftieth birthday and marks his move to Mount Olivet, his hermitage at the Abbey of Gethsemani, where he was finally able to fully embrace the joys and challenges of solitary life: 'In the hermitage, one must pray of go to seed. The pretense of prayer will not suffice. Just sitting will not suffice .

Turning Toward the World - The Pivotal Years; The Journals of Thomas Merton, Volume 4: 1960-1963

Prophétique. C'est le mot, pour qualifier ce livre de Thomas Merton, interdit de publication en 1961 par le maître général des Cisterciens et édité en 2004. En pleine guerre froide, Merton y prenait position contré l'arme nucléaire. Loin d'un pacifisme lénifiant, il mettait les chrétiens en demeure d'être à la hauteur de l'Évangile et dénonçait un Occident qui glissait vers le matérialisme et le cynisme. Son livre n'a pas pris une ride. Si le communisme s'est effondré, le libéralisme est à la dérive, creusant un véritable désert spirituel , et il s'est trouvé un nouvel adversaire : l'islamisme. La conduite à tenir face au péril pose problème. Comment ne pas se laisser emporter par la logique de la violence ? La lutte contre l' Axe du Mal  ne recèle-t-elle pas des pièges comparables à ceux de la rivalité des superpuissances ? La démocratie n'est-elle pas mise en danger par les méthodes employées pour la défendre ? La menace nucléaire, oubliée, resurgit en Iran, comme en Corée du Nord... Dans un monde de conflits, la question de la doctrine de la  guerre juste  et ses limites est plus que jamais posée. Au début du troisième millénaire, la réflexion lumineuse de Thomas Merton s'impose de façon indispensable.

La terreur ou la paix

Thomas Merton, moine cistercien américain, a voulu rappeler que l'avenir du l'homme ne se situe pas seulement au niveau du social, mais également du sprituel. Il s'agit de trouver en nous l'éternel. C'est pour cela qu'il s'est tourné vers les traditions religieuses de l'Asie, notamment le bouddhisme et le taoïsme. il a eu des intuitions géniales sur leur originalité. Merton appelait à un véritable œcuménisme, celui des âmes et des cœurs. Il est un des rares chrétiens qui ait compris le sens réel de la métaphysique orientale. Ses textes sur la méditation zen, Le Nirvana ou les écrits de Tchouang Tseu sont d'une grande richesse. Ils méritent d'être redécouverts.

Travaillé et retravaillé pendant plus de vingt ans, l'ouvrage " L'Expérience intérieure ", de Thomas Merton, jusqu'ici inédit, aborde la question de la contemplation à partir du vécu de son auteur. Pour autant, la dimension autobiographique est seconde, et ses " notes sur la contemplation " sont expressément destinées à un lectorat non pas de contemplatifs confirmés, mais de débutants, ou même de prédébutants qui aspirent à découvrir cette aventure. Après une mise en garde insistante quant aux pièges et aux dangers de l'entreprise, Merton en examine les voies et les formes principales, essentiellement en Occident, et en appelle au témoignage de plusieurs grands mystiques. Psychologie, voire psychanalyse, histoire religieuse, tradition occidentale mais aussi orientale, sont invoquées à l'appui de cette idée maîtresse : la contemplation est un chemin exigeant, mais sûr, où l'on doit s'engager, et non pas un objet à mériter, acquérir, ou conquérir ; on y avance à son insu, au fur et à mesure que, rompant avec les velléités, le volontarisme, ou les fantasmes narcissiques et contemplatifs de l'homme " extérieur ", on apprend à se tenir à l'écoute du Tout Autre et, par là même, de l'autre.

Thomas Merton, peu de temps avant sa mort, met noir sur blanc, sans académisme aucun, ce qui lui paraît essentiel dans la vie de prière. Il parle d'expérience et se veut pédagogue plus que théoricien. Il pourchasse les faux dilemmes : liberté ou discipline, culture ou simplicité, action ou recueillement. Tout est vrai et possible en même temps si l'on attache son coeur au véritable trésor. Homme du XXe siècle, Thomas Merton analyse l'angoisse, l'ennui et la solitude des enfants de l'ère technique. Pour avoir traversé lui-même ces passages à vide ", il n'en est que mieux autorisé à proposer la prière comme une porte ouverte sur l'espérance.

Never before published except as a series of articles (one per chapter) in an academic journal, this book on contemplation was revised by Merton shortly before his untimely death.
