"Commencées dans l'agitation, les comédies se terminent dans le calme, contrairement aux tragédies qui, commencées dans le calme, finissent en tempête". La formule est du dramaturge Thomas Heywood, elle date de 1612 et a le mérite de la simplicité. Mais c'est aussi sa limite, le genre "comédie", si c'en est un, étant quant à lui plutôt complexe. Shakespeare a écrit dix-huit pièces ainsi désignées, et ce qu'ont en commun La Comédie des erreurs (1590-93) et La Tempête (1611) ne saute pas aux yeux. Reste qu'il est possible d'identifier dans cet ensemble trois phases, que recoupent à peu près les trois volumes de la Pléiade. Après une première époque (1590-1598 ; tome I) qualifiée de "maniériste" et au cours de laquelle Shakespeare renverse les codes de l'amour pétrarquiste, c'est plus que jamais le sentiment amoureux qui confère leur (problématique) unité aux comédies écrites entre 1598 et 1604-06 (tome II). Il irrigue toutes les intrigues, des plus désopilantes aux plus romantiques, et s'accommode de toutes les modalités du comique. Comique énorme des Joyeuses Epouses de Windsor, "comédie sans comique" à l'autre bout du spectre : Tout est bien qui finit bien finit bien, mais contre toute attente. Entre ces deux extrêmes se déploient les "comédies brillantes". Jouant de la duplicité des apparences (trompe-l'oeil et anamorphoses sont alors en vogue), irrésistiblement séduisantes, elles mettent en scène le miroitement et les intermittences des cours. La dernière phase (1607-1613 ; tome III) réunit des pièces traitées de tous les noms : romances (drames romanesques), "comédies du renouveau", pièces "bâtardes", "tragi-comédies" - ni comédies, car la mort rôde, ni tragédies, car on n'y meurt pas assez. (Il ne manque en somme à ce chapelet de qualificatifs que la "tragédie comico-historico-pastorale" imaginée par Polonius dans Hamlet.) C'est le temps des harmonies paradoxales : s'y accordent le comique et l'odieux, le rire et la peur, les danses et les funérailles. La joie des héros du Conte d'hiver "patauge dans les larmes", la tristesse du Palamon des Deux Nobles Cousins "est une sorte de joie composite". Les intrigues de ces dernières pièces sont complexes. Strange est le mot qui, d'écho en écho, les traverse toutes. Les contrées sont inconnues, les rebondissements inattendus, les apparitions déconcertantes. Le merveilleux règne sans partage sur l'île enchantée de La Tempête. Puis "ce spectacle insubstantiel" s'évanouit ; Prospéro et ses semblables étaient "de l'étoffe dont les rêves sont faits". Les dernières comédies mettent en lumière le paradoxe de leur art : éphémères productions d'insaisissables rêveries, invraisemblables "histoires d'autrefois", elles pourraient ne pas nous concerner, et pourtant nous habitent. C'est avec elles que s'achève la publication de l'édition bilingue du théâtre de Shakespeare à la Pléiade.
