I SAW a gray-haired man, a figure of hale age, sitting at a desk and writing.

He seemed to be in a room in a tower, very high, so that through the tall window on his left one perceived only distances, a remote horizon of sea, a headland and that vague haze and glitter in the sunset that many miles away marks a city. All the appointments of this room were orderly and beautiful, and in some subtle quality, in this small difference and that, new to me and strange. They were in no fashion I could name, and the simple costume the man wore suggested neither period nor country. It might, I thought, be the Happy Future, or Utopia, or the Land of Simple Dreams; an errant mote of memory, Henry James's phrase and story of "The Great Good Place, " twinkled across my mind, and passed and left no light.

The man I saw wrote with a thing like a fountain pen, a modern touch that prohibited any historical retrospection, and as he finished each sheet, writing in an easy flowing hand, he added it to a growing pile upon a graceful little table under the window. His last done sheets lay loose, partly covering others that were clipped together into fascicles.

Clearly he was unaware of my presence, and I stood waiting until his pen should come to a pause. Old as he certainly was he wrote with a steady hand.

In the Days of the Comet

THE WORLD SET FREE was written in 1913 and published early in 1914, and it is the latest of a series of three fantasias of possibility, stories which all turn on the possible developments in the future of some contemporary force or group of forces. The World Set Free was written under the immediate shadow of the Great War. Every intelligent person in the world felt that disaster was impending and knew no way of averting it, but few of us realised in the earlier half of 1914 how near the crash was to us. The reader will be amused to find that here it is put off until the year 1956. He may naturally want to know the reason for what will seem now a quite extraordinary delay. As a prophet, the author must confess he has always been inclined to be rather a slow prophet. The war aeroplane in the world of reality, for example, beat the forecast in Anticipations by about twenty years or so. I suppose a desire not to shock the sceptical reader's sense of use and wont and perhaps a less creditable disposition to hedge, have something to do with this dating forward of one's main events, but in the particular case of The World Set Free there was, I think, another motive in holding the Great War back, and that was to allow the chemist to get well forward with his discovery of the release of atomic energy.

C'est un pur hasard, par exemple, qui amena la découverte que fit le prince de Monaco, pendant l'été de 1895, d'une douzaine environ de formes nouvelles, parmi lesquelles se trouvait le tentacule mentionné plus haut. Il arriva qu'un cachalot fut tué, au large de Terceira, par des baleiniers, et, dans ses derniers efforts, il se précipita contre le yacht du prince, le manqua, roula par-dessous et mourut à vingt mètres du gouvernail. 

Dans son agonie, il rejeta un certain nombre de gros objets. Le prince, se rendant vaguement compte de leur étrangeté et de leur importance, put, par un heureux expédient, s'en emparer avant qu'ils n'eussent coulé à fond. Il mit ses hélices en mouvement, et ces objets bizarres demeurèrent dans les tourbillons ainsi formés jusqu'à ce qu'une chaloupe fût mise à la mer. C'étaient des céphalopodes entiers, et des fragments de céphalopodes, quelques-uns de proportions gigantesques et presque tous inconnus de la science."

"Personne n'aurait cru, dans les dernières années du XIXe siècle, que les choses humaines fussent observées, de la façon la plus pénétrante et la plus attentive, par des intelligences supérieures aux intelligences humaines et cependant mortelles comme elles ; que, tandis que les hommes s'absorbaient dans leurs occupations, ils étaient examinés et étudiés d'aussi près peut-être qu'un savant peut étudier avec un microscope les créatures transitoires qui pullulent et se multiplient dans une goutte d'eau. Avec une suffisance infinie, les hommes allaient de-ci de-là par le monde, vaquant à leurs petites affaires, dans la sereine sécurité de leur empire sur la matière. Il est possible que, sous le microscope, les infusoires fassent de même. Personne ne donnait une pensée aux mondes plus anciens de l'espace comme sources de danger pour l'existence terrestre, ni ne songeait seulement à eux pour écarter l'idée de vie à leur surface comme impossible ou improbable. Il est curieux de se rappeler maintenant les habitudes mentales de ces jours lointains. Tout au plus les habitants de la Terre s'imaginaient-ils qu'il pouvait y avoir sur la planète Mars des êtres probablement inférieurs à eux, et disposés à faire bon accueil à une expédition missionnaire. Cependant, par-delà le gouffre de l'espace, des esprits qui sont à nos esprits ce que les nôtres sont à ceux des bêtes qui périssent, des intellects vastes, calmes et impitoyables, considéraient cette terre avec des yeux envieux, dressaient lentement et sûrement leurs plans pour la conquête de notre monde. Et dans les premières années du XXe siècle vint la grande désillusion." 
 
A la fin du XIXe siècle, plusieurs astronomes observent, pendant une dizaine de nuits, des curieux événements sur la planète Mars : des éclairs mais aussi des explosions de gaz. Les phénomènes stoppent mais des météores, en provenance de ladite planète, s'écrasent sur la Terre... de bien étranges météores de forme cylindrique...
