Plato studied under Socrates and was Aristotles teacher. Together these three Greeks developed the basis of philosophical thinking for the entire Western world. Plato was also a writer, mathematician, and founder of the Academy in Athens, which was the first university in Europe. Philebus is one of Platos more difficult works to interpret. In Philebus the major theme revolves around the doctrine that good resides in thought and mind rather than in pleasure or the body.

Awaiting his trial on charges of impiety and heresy, Socrates encounters Euthyphro, a self-proclaimed authority on matters of piety and the will of the gods. Socrates, desiring instruction in these matters, converses with Euthyphro, but as usual, the man who professes to know nothing fares better than the man who claims to be an expert. One of Plato’s well-known Socratic Dialogues, Euthyphro probes the nature of piety, and notably poses the so-called Euthyphro Dilemma: Do the gods love a thing because it is holy, or is a thing holy because it is loved by the gods?

Euthyphron

Timaeus, one of Plato's acknowledged masterpieces, is an attempt to construct the universe & explain its contents by means of as few axioms as possible. The result is a brilliant, bizarre & surreal cosmos--the product of the rational thinking of a creator god & his astral assistants, & of purely mechanistic causes based on the behavior of the four elements. At times dazzlingly clear, at times intriguingly opaque, this was state-of-the-art science in the middle of the 4th century BCE. The world is presented as a battlefield of forces that are unified only by the will of God, who had to do the best he could with recalcitrant building materials. The unfinished companion piece, Critias, is the foundational text for the story of Atlantis. It tells how a model society became corrupt, & how a lost race of Athenians defeated the aggression of the invading Atlanteans.
