Le jour de son arrestation, K. ouvre la porte de sa chambre pour s'informer de son petit-déjeuner et amorce ainsi une dynamique du questionnement qui s'appuie, tout au long du roman, sur cette métaphore de la porte. Accusé d'une faute qu'il ignore par des juges qu'il ne voit jamais et conformément à des lois que personne ne peut lui enseigner, il va pousser un nombre ahurissant de portes pour tenter de démêler la situation. À mesure que le procès prend de l'ampleur dans sa vie, chaque porte ouverte constitue une fermeture plus aliénante sur le monde de la procédure judiciaire, véritable source d'enfermement et de claustrophobie. L'instruction suit son cours sur environ un an durant lequel l'absence d'événements est vue uniquement à travers les yeux de K. Sa lucidité, dérisoire et inutile jusqu'à la fin, contrairement à celle du héros de La Métamorphose, n'apporte aucun soulagement. Der Bau ist eine 1923-1924 entstandene, unvollendete Erzählung von Franz Kafka, die postum erstmals 1928 in der Zeitschrift Witiko und 1931 von Max Brod veröffentlicht wurde. Sie schildert den vergeblichen Kampf eines Tieres um die Perfektionierung seines riesigen Erdbaues zum Schutz vor Feinden. Die Erzählung handelt von der Verstrickung in die zwanghafte Beobachtung einer selbstgeschaffenen labyrinthartigen Anlage, die zunehmende Paranoia erzeugt.

Les Journaux de Kafka : voici, enfin, la première traduction intégrale en français des 12 cahiers, écrits de 1910 à 1922, que cette édition reproduit à l'identique, sans coupes et sans censure, en rétablissant l'ordre chronologique original. La traduction de Robert Kahn se tient au plus près de l'écriture de Kafka, de sa rythmique, de sa précision et sécheresse, laissant "résonner dans la langue d'arrivée l'écho de l'original". Elle s'inscrit à la suite de ses autres retraductions de Kafka publiées aux éditions Nous, A Milena (2015) et Derniers cahiers (2017). Les Journaux de Kafka, toujours surprenants, sont le lieu d'une écriture lucide et inquiète où se mêlent intime et dehors, humour et noirceur, visions du jour et scènes de rêves, où se succèdent notes autobiographiques, récits de voyages et de rencontres, énoncés lapidaires, ainsi qu'esquisses et fragments narratifs plus longs. Dans ce battement entre vie écrite par éclats et soudaines amorces fictionnelles, les Journaux se révèlent être le coeur de l'oeuvre de Kafka : le lieu où les frontières entre la vie et l'oeuvre s'évanouissent. Il est plus clair que n'importe quoi d'autre que, attaqué sur la droite et sur la gauche par de très puissants ennemis, je ne puisse m'échapper ni à droite ni à gauche, seulement en avant animal affamé le chemin mène à une nourriture mangeable, à de l'air respirable, à une vie libre, même si c'est derrière la vie.
