Dorothy and her dog Toto are carried away from Kansas by a cyclone and transported to the wonderful world of Oz. She meets three companions - Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion - and the three journey to the Emerald City of Oz to ask the Wizard of Oz to give them their heart's desires, which in Dorothy's case is to return home to Kansas.

La princesse Ozma du Pays d’Oz, accompagnée de l’Épouvantail (désormais roi d'Oz), du Bûcheron de Fer-Blanc et du Lion Peureux, rejoint Dorothy et ses amis sur un tapis magique et les emmène au royaume des Nomes dans le but de libérer la famille royale d’Ev. En chemin, les deux enfants, le cheval Jim et le chaton Eureka sont engloutis par un tremblement de terre et atterrissent dans la contrée des Mangaboos, peuplée d’hommes-légumes. Ils y retrouvent le Magicien d’Oz, arrivé dans une montgolfière avec ses neuf minuscules porcelets. Chassés de ce territoire, Dorothy et ses amis entreprennent un périple souterrain qui les mène à la Vallée de Voe, dont les habitants sont invisibles, puis à la contrée de Naught, où vivent des Gargouilles de bois, qui les emprisonnent. Après s’être évadés, ils tentent de remonter à la surface de la terre, mais se retrouvent dans une grotte sans issue ; ce n’est que grâce à l’intervention d’Ozma qui se sert de la ceinture magique du roi des Nomes que Dorothy et ses amis sont transportés au Pays d’Oz. Le Magicien décide de rester en Oz, tandis que Dorothy, Zeb, Jim et Eureka repartent chez eux, encore une fois grâce à la ceinture magique.

Mrs. McFarland was attending the weekly card party held by the Women's Anti-Gambling League. Sister Nell's young man had called quite unexpectedly to take her for a long drive. Papa was at the office, as usual. It was Mary Ann's day out. As for Emeline, she certainly should have stayed in the house and looked after the little girl; but Emeline had a restless nature.

"Would you mind, miss, if I just crossed the alley to speak a word to Mrs. Carleton's girl?" she asked Martha.

"'Course not, " replied the child. "You'd better lock the back door, though, and take the key, for I shall be upstairs."

"Oh, I'll do that, of course, miss, " said the delighted maid, and ran away to spend the afternoon with her friend, leaving Martha quite alone in the big house, and locked in, into the bargain.

So erzählt der alte einbeinige Käpt'n Bill eines Tages der kleinen Mayre Griffiths, Spitzname Trot, von den Meerjungfrauen. Ihr Gespräch wird jedoch belauscht, und als sie am nächsten Tag eine Meereshöhle an der Küste besuchen, werden sie von mehreren Meerjungfrauen überrascht, die sie einladen, sie in ihr Unterwasserreich zu begleiten.

Dort lernen die beiden Besucher an der Seite der freundlichen Meerjungfrauen die Schönheiten und Gefahren der Tiefsee kennen. Als jedoch der böse Zauberer Zog, ein abscheuliches Mischwesen aus Mensch, Fisch, Vogel und Reptil, die Gunst der Stunde nutzt, und sie auf sein verwunschenes Schloß entführt, finden sie sich plötzlich in einer lebensbedrohlichen Lage wieder.
