It was Lady Windermere's last reception before Easter, and Bentinck House was even more crowded than usual. Six Cabinet Ministers had come on from the Speaker's Levée in their stars and ribands, all the pretty women wore their smartest dresses, and at the end of the picture-gallery stood the Princess Sophia of Carlsruhe, a heavy Tartar-looking lady, with tiny black eyes and wonderful emeralds, talking bad French at the top of her voice, and laughing immoderately at everything that was said to her. It was certainly a wonderful medley of people. Gorgeous peeresses chatted affably to violent Radicals, popular preachers brushed coat-tails with eminent sceptics, a perfect bevy of bishops kept following a stout prima-donna from room to room, on the staircase stood several Royal Academicians, disguised as artists, and it was said that at one time the supper-room was absolutely crammed with geniuses. In fact, it was one of Lady Windermere's best nights, and the Princess stayed till nearly half-past eleven.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 - 1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams and plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment which was followed by his early death. At the turn of the 1890s, he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). The opportunity to construct aesthetic details precisely, and combine them with larger social themes, drew Wilde to write drama. He wrote Salome (1891) in French in Paris but it was refused a licence. Unperturbed, Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London. At the height of his fame and success, while his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), was still on stage in London, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, prosecuted for libel, a charge carrying a penalty of up to two years in prison. The trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop his charges and led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency with other men. After two more trials he was convicted and imprisoned for two years' hard labour. In 1897, in prison, he wrote De Profundis which was published in 1905, a long letter which discusses his spiritual journey through his trials, forming a dark counterpoint to his earlier philosophy of pleasure. Upon his release he left immediately for France, never to return to Ireland or Britain. There he wrote his last work, The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898), a long poem commemorating the harsh rhythms of prison life. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six.

Ce beau livre regroupe l'intégrale des oeuvres d'Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), à l'exception de ses contributions de critique littéraire.
Auteur prodige, déjà célèbre pour ses mots d'esprit lorsque paraît, en 1881, son premier recueil de vers, il écrit des contes pour ses enfants (Le Fantôme de Canterville, Le Crime de lord Arthur Savile), embrasse la cause féministe, déploie ses talents de pamphlétaire et son art du paradoxe. En 1891, son unique roman, Le Portrait de Dorian Gray, scandalise l'Angleterre. Le prince de l'aphorisme devient ensuite dramaturge. La première de L'Éventail de lady Windermere est un triomphe. L'année suivante, il écrit en français Salomé pour Sarah Bernhardt, qui l'a subjugué ; la pièce est aussitôt interdite par la censure.
Chantre d'un art sans entraves et de la souveraine liberté de l'écrivain, il entame avec lord Alfred Douglas une liaison qui ruinera sa vie et sa carrière : en pleine gloire, il est condamné aux travaux forcés pour outrage aux bonnes moeurs. Ses enfants ne le reverront jamais et c'est au bagne qu'il rédige la Balade de la geôle de Reading. C'est un homme brisé qui s'éteint, en 1900, dans un médiocre hôtel parisien. De profundis, sa lettre-confession, sera publiée en 1905.

Un mari idéal (1895) est la troisième des comédies d'Oscar Wilde. Créée quelques semaines avant L'Importance d'être constant, elle fut jouée au même moment, et l'auteur triompha sur deux scènes différentes de Londres. 
Sir Robert Chiltern semble disposer de tous les atouts : il est riche, sous-secrétaire d'État aux Affaires étrangères, et sa femme voit en lui un mari idéal. Mais son succès repose sur une grave malhonnêteté, dissimulée depuis sa jeunesse. Il sera victime d'un chantage. 
La comédie dénonce l'hypocrisie, le culte de l'or qui corrompt la société et l'affairisme qui gagne les milieux dirigeants. Cette visée politique n'empêche nullement Wilde, dans un festival de mots d'esprit, d'aphorismes et de paradoxes frisant l'absurde, de jouer avec le langage, avec l'intrigue et les conventions scéniques, comme pour mieux affirmer sa liberté et sa modernité.
