John Steinbeck est déjà un homme malade et fatigué quand il part au Vietnam, à 64 ans, couvrir le conflit qui mine les Etats-Unis. II a beau connaître la guerre - il a suivi les boys en 1943 et a été blessé en Afrique du Nord -, il est dérouté par ce qu'il découvre : une guerre qui ne comporte " ni front, ni arrières ". Embarquant sur les vedettes qui sillonnent les deltas, volant à bord des hélicoptères Hue y, il retrouve son fils.
