THE WORLD SET FREE was written in 1913 and published early in 1914, and it is the latest of a series of three fantasias of possibility, stories which all turn on the possible developments in the future of some contemporary force or group of forces. The World Set Free was written under the immediate shadow of the Great War. Every intelligent person in the world felt that disaster was impending and knew no way of averting it, but few of us realised in the earlier half of 1914 how near the crash was to us. The reader will be amused to find that here it is put off until the year 1956. He may naturally want to know the reason for what will seem now a quite extraordinary delay. As a prophet, the author must confess he has always been inclined to be rather a slow prophet. The war aeroplane in the world of reality, for example, beat the forecast in Anticipations by about twenty years or so. I suppose a desire not to shock the sceptical reader's sense of use and wont and perhaps a less creditable disposition to hedge, have something to do with this dating forward of one's main events, but in the particular case of The World Set Free there was, I think, another motive in holding the Great War back, and that was to allow the chemist to get well forward with his discovery of the release of atomic energy.

»Der Krieg der Welten« von H. G. Wells ist ein spannend geschriebener Klassiker der Science Fiction. Eine hoch entwickelte Marszivilisation greift die Erde an. Schnell brechen die Marsianer den menschlichen Widerstand mit ihren modernen Waffen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass sie den Menschen technologisch weit überlegen sind. Die Geschichte wird von einem Ich-Erzähler geschildert, der die Ereignisse mit viel Glück überlebt hat. Dadurch gewinnt die Schilderung besondere Spannung und Unmittelbarkeit.

H. G. Wells spielt in dem 1898 erschienenen Roman »Der Krieg der Welten« auf die Expansionspolitik des British Empire an. Wells zeigt, wie den Eingeborenen einer Kolonie zumute ist, wenn die Briten mit ihren modernen Waffen die Herrschaft übernehmen. 

Die Invasion aus dem All wurde zum Vorbild für zahlreiche andere Romane, Filme und Hörspiele. »Der Krieg der Welten« begründete H. G. Wells Weltruhm als Science Fiction Autor.

Ce devait être dans quelque appartement d'une tour très élevée, car, par la haute fenêtre, à droite, on n'apercevait que des lointains : un horizon de mer, un promontoire, et cette buée lumineuse du soleil couchant qui signale la présence d'une ville. Tous les aménagements de la pièce respiraient l'ordre et la beauté, - et je ne sais quoi de subtil, et de mal défini, l'inattendu de tel détail, me donnait une sensation de nouveau et d'étrange. Je ne reconnaissais aucun style spécial, et le costume simple de l'homme assis ne suggérait l'idée d'aucune époque ni d'aucun pays. Peut-être, pensai-je, suis-je au pays de l'« heureux avenir, au pays d'Utopie » ou des « rêves simples » ? Une phrase d'Henry James : « Le lieu du grand repos », me traversa la mémoire, glissa comme une lueur sur mon esprit, et s'éteignit sans m'éclairer. 

L'homme écrivait avec un stylet assez semblable à notre porte-plume réservoir, et ce détail bien moderne m'interdisait toute pensée rétrospective. De temps à autre, il ajoutait la feuille qu'il venait de couvrir d'une écriture courante et facile à des feuilles entassées sur une gracieuse petite table, placée devant la fenêtre, à portée de sa main. Les derniers feuillets gisaient épars, recouvrant à demi les autres réunis en fascicules par des attaches. 

Évidemment, il était inconscient de ma présence, et je restai là à attendre que l'écrivain s'interrompît ; tout vieux qu'il fût, il traçait les signes d'une main ferme." 

Un vieil homme écrit ses mémoires : Willie, ouvrier plutôt révolté, est amoureux de Nettie et est jaloux jusqu'à vouloir la tuer ainsi que son fiancé... Mais une comète qui se dirige vers la Terre vient tout changer en métamorphosant l'atmosphère...

"L'étranger arriva en février, par une matinée brumeuse, dans un tourbillon de vent et de neige. Il venait, à pied, par la dune, de la station de Bramblehurst, portant de sa main couverte d'un gant épais, une petite valise noire. Il était bien enveloppé des pieds à la tête, et le bord d'un chapeau de feutre mou ne laissait apercevoir de sa figure que le bout luisant de son nez. La neige s'était amoncelée sur ses épaules, sur sa poitrine ; elle ajoutait aussi une crête blanche au sac dont il était chargé. 

Il entra, chancelant, plus mort que vif, dans l'auberge, et, posant à terre son bagage : 

- Du feu, s'écria-t-il, du feu, par charité ! Une chambre et du feu ! 

Il frappa de la semelle, secoua dans le bar la neige qui le couvrait, puis suivit Mme Hall dans le petit salon pour faire ses conditions. Sans autre préambule, et jetant deux souverains sur la table, il s'installa dans l'auberge." 

Un étrange client s'installe dans l'auberge, tenue par Mme Hall, au village d'Iping, en Angleterre. Toujours emmitouflé de la tête aux pieds, personne ne peut voir son visage. Les villageois causent, chacun y va de son hypothèse... Qui est-il ? Un chercheur défiguré ou atteint d'une malformation ? Un hors la loi recherché par la police ? Bientôt d'étranges phénomènes ont lieu dans le village...

L'homme invisible

ON February the First 1887, the Lady Vain was lost by collision with a derelict when about the latitude 1° S. and longitude 107° W.

On January the Fifth, 1888-that is eleven months and four days after-my uncle, Edward Prendick, a private gentleman, who certainly went aboard the Lady Vain at Callao, and who had been considered drowned, was picked up in latitude 5° 3' S. and longitude 101° W. in a small open boat of which the name was illegible, but which is supposed to have belonged to the missing schooner Ipecacuanha. He gave such a strange account of himself that he was supposed demented. Subsequently he alleged that his mind was a blank from the moment of his escape from the Lady Vain. His case was discussed among psychologists at the time as a curious instance of the lapse of memory consequent upon physical and mental stress. The following narrative was found among his papers by the undersigned, his nephew and heir, but unaccompanied by any definite request for publication.

Als Graham erwacht, hat er 203 Jahre lang geschlafen. Er ist der Hauptcharakter in H. G. Wells »Wenn der Schläfer erwacht« . Wahrscheinlich ist Graham 1899 eingeschlafen, denn das ist das letzte Jahr in das seine Erinnerung zurückreicht. Der Roman spielt folglich um das Jahr 2100. Graham ist ohne sein Zutun zum Herrscher der Welt geworden. Einst hatten ihm zwei Männer ihr Vermögen vermacht, das von einem Vermögensverwalter so geschickt gemehrt wurde, dass ihm nun weite Teile der Erde gehören. Die Geschicke der Welt werden von einigen wenigen Menschen gesteuert; die anderen leben in sklavenähnlichen Verhältnissen.

H. G. Wells Zukunftsvision übt recht deutliche Kritik an den gesellschaftlichen Zuständen des frühindustriellen Englands, wie Wells es kannte. Manche seiner düsteren Prognosen für das Jahr 2100 scheint die Menschheit gebannt zu haben, bei anderen ist Wells Vorhersage erschreckend aktuell.

Der Bestseller-Autor Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) war einer der Begründer des modernen Science Fiction-Romans. Mit seinen wissenschaftlich fundierten Romanen wurde er einer der erfolgreichsten englischen Schriftsteller.
