Ce recueil est constitué de sept écrits rassemblés dans le contextes de la "philosophie de l'art" que Jean-François Lyotard a construite dans les années quatre-vingt, à l'époque du Différend (1983) et du "tournant kantien" aboutissant aux Leçons sur l'Analytique du sublime (1992). Les textes focalisent sur trois artistes d'une orientation esthétique bien divergente : le dessinateur coloriste Valério Adami, le conceptualisateur-métaphysicien Shsaku Arakawa, le pragmaticien de l'invisible Daniel Buren. Ces trois protagonistes on en commun de montrer que l'intérêt artistique n'est pas dans la simple dénotation d'un référentiel, mais dans les connotations de nuances matérielles, les saveurs, les tons, en un mot : le visuel, à peine dévoilé dans l'anamnèse guidant le visible et provoquant l'inquiétude essentielle de 'l'expérience esthétique. Que peindre ? : ni la réalité ou un "monde" mi une riche subjectivité ni même mes fantasmes du rêve ou les idéaux de l'être-ensemble, mais l'acte de peindre lui-même, et au-delà de la performance du peintre, la présence des matières, qui de toute évidence, est blank, selon un mot d'Arakawa, insaisissable.

Philosophical aesthetics has seen an amazing revival over the past decade, as a radical questioning of the very grounds of Western epistemology has revealed that some antinomies of aesthetic experience—and in particular of the limits of the aesthetical—can be viewed as a general, yet necessarily open model for human understanding. In this revival, no text in the classical corpus of Western philosophy has been more frequently discussed than the complex paragraphs modestly inserted into Kant's Critique of Judgment as sections 23-29: the Analytic of the Sublime.This book is a rigorous explication de texte, a close reading of these sections. First, Lyotard reconstitutes, following the letter of Kant's analysis, the philosophical context of his critical writings and of the European Enlightenment. Second, because the analytic of the sublime reveals the inability of aesthetic experience to bridge the separate realms of theoretical and practical reason, Lyotard can connect his reconstitution of Kant's critical project with today's debates about the very conditions—and limits—of presentation in general.Lyotard enables us to see the sublime as a model for reflexive thinking generally via his concept of the "differend," which emphasizes the inevitability of conflicts and incompatibilities between different notions and "phrases." The Analytic of the Sublime, he points out, tries to argue that human thought is always constituted through a similar incompatibility between different intellectual and affective faculties. These lessons thus highlight the analysis of a "differend of feeling" in Kant's text, which is also the analysis of a "feeling of differend," and connect this feeling with the transport that leads all thought (critical thought included) to its limits.

This translation of Lyotard's first book, La Phenomenologie, supplies an important link to Lyotard's more recent works. Phenomenology presents a commentary on the phenomenological movement. From the dual perspectives of a work on, and of, phenomenology, Lyotard's text profiles the different aspects of phenomenology, focusing particularly on the writings of Hegel, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, and Tran Duc Thao. Phenomenology marks a particular episode in Lyotard's reflections on the "philosophical project" and is emblematic of his critical reflections on philosophy's involvements in routine, daily commitments. Like Merleau-Ponty, in this work Lyotard eliminates philosophy as a "separate existence." Beyond offering an account of certain phenomenological themes, Lyotard's commentary explicates phenomenology's relevance to psychology, sociology, and history.

La phénoménologie

L'Analytique du sublime occupe une place modeste dans la Critique de la faculté de juger de Kant, où elle est insérée sans aucune justification. Cependant le texte est si dense, parfois convulsif, qu'il est l'un des plus difficiles à déchiffrer du corpus kantien, au point que les commentaires souvent le simplifient ou le négligent. Cette Analytique ouvre pourtant la voie à une esthétique critique toute différente de celle du goût. Elle annonce une autre façon de situer et d'interroger les oeuvres de l'art et de la littérature. La pensée postkantienne et le romantisme ont à la fois entendu et étouffé l'obscur message. Ces Leçons n'ont pour objet que d'essayer d'expliquer le texte de l'Analytique. Lyotard procède de façon interne, ne s'aidant, à peu de choses près, que des trois Critiques kantiennes. Il se soucie moins du système que Kant a en vue que de la réflexion qui soutient sa recherche. Il essaie de retrouver le motif qui commande ce texte : un différend violent peut surgir entre les pouvoirs de la pensée ; le sublime est le sentiment qui le signale à celle-ci.
