Après avoir décrit son cabinet d'homme de loi, lieu sinistre cerné par les grands murs sombres des immeubles avoisinants de Wall Street, et ses clercs, qui évoquent irrésistiblement les personnages les plus comiques de Dickens, le narrateur de cette Histoire de Wall Street rapporte comment Bartleby, qu'il avait recruté comme copiste, refusa obstinément de répondre à tous les ordres et à toutes les demandes, sollicitations et supplications qui lui étaient adressés, leur opposant une même formule : " J'aimerais mieux pas " (I would prefer not to), et entraînant par là le dérèglement de tout son univers.
