Even though the integrity of the residential belfry of the Perret Tower in Amiens could not be preserved, interestinf discoveries are still possible among the precision and tigour of the European Tower in Thionville, the sculptural plasticity of the tower blocks of Grenoble, the sculptural singularity of that of La Duchère or the restrained purism of the Viollet Tower in Angers. Ce livre relate, sous la forme d'une chronique, l'histoire d'un des derniers projets de Le Corbusier qui conçoit entre 1962 et 1965, un palais des congrès pour la capitale alsacienne. L'auteur explique la fascination qu'a exercée ce projet et met en lumière le fonctionnement des dernières années de l'atelier de Le Corbusier, l'importance des collaborateurs et des partenaires de l'opération, le poids de plus en plus imposant de l'ingénierie sur l'architecture et comment le monde de la commande publique bascule pendant les années soixante. La genèse, les différentes phases de l'évolution du plan, la mise au point et le devenir du projet, après le décès de Le Corbusier, mettent en avant le rôle de figures politiques françaises de premier plan, depuis le commanditaire, Pierre Pflimlin, maire d'une métropole en développement jusqu'au ministre André Malraux. Le rôle des acteurs est mis au jour grâce à l'étude systématique de sources documentaires complémentaires. Ainsi le récit, construit à partir de recherches dans les archives d'architectes et de la maîtrise d'ouvrage, illustre une pratique de l'histoire ouverte à l'examen des circonstances politiques, économiques ou techniques qui conditionnent le quotidien des formes architecturales.
