In 1847, while in Brussels, the German Communist League asked Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx to draft a pamphlet on the principles of communism. It was published in 1848 under the title Manifesto of the Communist Party, and in it, Marx and Engels discuss the basic communist theories on society, economics, class struggles and politics. The Communist Manifesto was published at a time when revolutions were spreading throughout Europe, and the work was met with a mixture of praise and criticism. While the authors were blamed as scapegoats by authorities in the wake of social unrest, others were persuaded by the Communist League's principles. Durant cette période, certains événements semblent indiquer qu'en Europe, la léthargie des forces révolutionnaires qui durait depuis dix ans touche à sa fin. Une crise économique, partie d'Amérique, touche l'Europe en 1857. Mais cet essor du mouvement révolutionnaire qui n'a pas été apporté par la crise, Marx et Engels l'attendent ensuite de la guerre d'Italie, où des révoltes avaient chassé plusieurs princes de leurs trônes. Cet espoir est lui aussi déçu, comme celui qu'ils avaient placé dans les mouvements anti-bonapartistes en France, et divers mouvement sociaux en Russie. Ils cherchent durant ces années à se détourner du journalisme qui leur prend trop de temps. Marx travaille sur la question de la dialectique chez Hegel, sur la circulation du capital, sur le cycle de la reproduction industrielle, et rédige le premier cahier du Capital. En 1859, il met au point la Contribution à la critique de l'économie politique et Engels publie une brochure intitulée Po und Rhein.

Communism is a left-wing to far-left sociopolitical, philosophical, and economic ideology within the socialist movement, whose goal is the establishment of a communist society, a socioeconomic order centered around common ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange that allocates products to everyone in the society. Communist society also involves the absence of private property, social classes, money, and the state. Communists often seek a voluntary state of self-governance but disagree on the means to this end. This reflects a distinction between a more libertarian approach of communization, revolutionary spontaneity, and workers' self-management, and a more vanguardist or Communist party-driven approach through the development of a constitutional socialist state followed by the withering away of the state. As one of the main ideologies on the political spectrum, communism is placed on the left-wing alongside socialism, and communist parties and movements have been described as radical left or far left.
