Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life is a novel by the English author George Eliot, first published in eight instalments in 1871-1872. 

The novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829-1832, and follows several distinct, intersecting stories with a large cast of characters.

Issues include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education.

Mary Ann (Marian) Evans (1819 -    1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English   novelist, journalist and translator.    She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. George Eliot est le pseudonyme de Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880). Durant son enfance, elle reçoit une éducation très religieuse dont elle s'émancipe peu à peu lorsqu'elle rencontre le libre-penseur Charles Bray. Elle fait scandale à deux reprises, une première fois en affichant ouvertement son couple avec un homme marié, une seconde fois en se mariant avec un homme bien plus jeune qu'elle. Son ouvre, qui compte entre autres "Middlemarch" et "Daniel Deronda", est célèbre pour la fine analyse psychologique de ses personnages, que l'auteure situe toujours dans une Angleterre décrite avec la force de son écriture réaliste.

Silas Marner

Le jeune Daniel Deronda, qui a été élevé par son " oncle " en gentleman anglais, se voit attribuer des fonctions de passeur entre deux cultures, entre deux traditions religieuses : le hasard d'une rencontre l'amène à fréquenter la communauté juive de Londres. Son comportement généreux et chevaleresque le rapproche de la petite chanteuse Mirah et de son frère, véritable prophète des temps modernes rêvant d'un retour en Terre Sainte pour son peuple ; mais Daniel reste attaché à la belle Gwendolen, qu'il a vue se précipiter dans un mariage d'intérêt désastreux, tournant au tragique. Dans ce roman novateur, qui, un quart de siècle avant le freudisme, pressent l'existence de territoires non cartographiés de la conscience, le héros est écartelé entre le rôle de confident que Gwendolen veut lui imposer pour échapper à ses peurs et à l'enfer de sa vie conjugale, et la mission qui lui est réservée dans le monde juif.
