Quand paraît L'Italien ou le confessionnal des Pénitents noirs, Ann Radcliffe est déjà célèbre, suite à la publication d'un précédent roman gothique, Les mystères du château d'Udolphe. Elle est encensée par des auteurs comme Byron, « monk » Lewis, Walter Scott. Elle influencera les soeurs Bronte et Dickens.

L'histoire se passe au XVIIIe siècle en Italie où un jeune noble de Naples, Vincentino di Vivaldi, rencontre une belle demoiselle Ellena Rosalba, tombe amoureux d'elle et veut l'épouser. La mère du jeune homme, la Marquise, qui s'y oppose, demande au mystérieux moine Schedoni d'enlever Ellena. Ellena est enfermée dans un couvent... alors que Vincentino après avoir poursuivi en vain le mystérieux moine est enfermé... Gothique par excellence, ce roman est une pépite de l'époque , considéré à juste titre comme aussi important que "Le Moine".

Un carrosse lancé à toute allure, dans la nuit, en pleine  tempête, un couple fuyant la justice, un arrêt devant une vieille  maison isolée sur la lande, occupée par des bandits tenant  prisonnière une belle jeune fille...
Les Mystères de la forêt est  un roman gothique, baignant dans une atmosphère inquiétante,  sur fond d'architecture médiévale et de surnaturel. C'est pour  ce livre qu'Ann Radcliffe mérite particulièrement son titre de  "maîtresse du suspense". Roman d'aventures, c'est aussi un  roman de la sensibilité : volupté dans le malheur, émotions  exacerbées sont mises en avant. Mais le désir et la sexualité  refoulée ne sont jamais loin, dans ce livre dont le sous-titre  pourrait être "Adeline ou les malheurs de la vertu".

L'héroïne, Emilie Saint Aubert, affronte de nombreux malheurs dès son plus jeune âge : la perte de ses parents, le remariage de sa tante, sa tutrice, avec un riche et mystérieux Italien.Udolfo, le sombre château dans lequel Emilie est retenue prisonnière par l'Italien machiavélique, représente toutes les craintes de la jeune fille (et du lecteur). Ce lieu, qui deviendra le symbole de la littérature gothique, est construit, dès ce roman précurseur, comme un labyrinthe menaçant où les esprits se perdent. Les couloirs qu'Emilie arpente la nuit sont-ils aussi déserts qu'ils n'y paraissent ?Sous la menace de la torture et de la séquestration, Emilie s'apprête à faire la rencontre douloureuse du surnaturel, mais aussi celle de la véri té, perdue dans l'étourdissement de l'illusion et des apparences.
