Eulenburg Miniature Scores

With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces. Volume 1 contains both frequently played educational works by Bach and lesser known pieces by Handel and Scarlatti, Volume 2 compositions by Haydn and Mozart as well as musically and educationally attractive pieces by Cimarosa. Volume 3 (scheduled for publication in summer 2013) contains pieces by Beethoven, Schubert and Hummel, Volume 4 (scheduled for publication in early 2014) works by Schumann, Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Urtext Primo - ein neues Konzept für den Einstieg Vol. 2

The Sonata in D major (Hob. XVI : 37) is one of Joseph Haydn's best-known and most frequently played piano sonatas. The sparklingly brilliant first movement, the brooding and archaic undertones in the short largo as well as the typically Haydnesque cadences in the finale make this piece an excellent educational work that even more experienced music enthusiasts love to play. The Wiener Urtext Edition has now published a separate edition, based on Ulrich Leisinger's newly revised version of the Christa Landon edition. Vers 1800 parurent les premières biographies en allemand des grands compositeurs du siècle écoulé : celles de Mozart par Niemtschek (Prague, 1798), dédiée à Haydn, et de Bach par Forkel (Leipzig, 1802), dédiée à Gottfried van Swieten.

Haydn (né en 1732) était alors considéré comme le plus grand compositeur vivant, et deux personnages songèrent à écrire sa biographie : Georg August Griesinger (1769-1845) et Albert Christoph Dies (1755-1822). Tous deux eurent l'avantage de bien connaître Haydn dans les dernières années de sa vie. Leurs biographies furent publiées l'une et l'autre en 1810, un an après la mort du compositeur. La même année parurent à Paris deux brochures sur Haydn dues respectivement à Nicolas Etienne Framery (1745-1810) et à Joachim Le Breton (1760-1819).

Les livres de Griesinger et de Dies n'ont jamais été traduits intégralement en français, et on ne peut consulter les brochures de Framery et Le Breton que dans de rares bibliothèques. Le présent ouvrage comble donc une lacune importante. Griesinger, Dies, Framery et Le Breton se contredisent plus d'une fois, ce que ne manquèrent pas de relever les contemporains, y compris les intéressés eux-mêmes, mais les recherches récentes sur Haydn permettent d'éclaircir la plupart des questions soulevées.

Une préface et un appareil de notes complètent les quatre textes. Sont abondamment cités de nombreux documents d'époque, en particulier les lettres écrites de Vienne par Griesinger à l'éditeur Breitkopf & Hârtel, ainsi que la biographie de Haydn publiée en 1812 par le poète et homme du monde italien Giuseppe Carpani (1752-1825). Est ainsi dressé un surprenant panorama de la vie musicale en Europe et à Vienne à la fin du XVIIIe iècle et dans les premières années du XIe.
