MILITARY "crime" is not crime at all, as we law-abiding citizens recognize it.

The outbreak in the Anchester Regiment was not a very serious affair; from what I can gather, it mostly took the form of breaking out of barracks after "lights out."

But, explained Smithy, it got a bit too thick, and one of the consequences was that the guard was doubled, pickets were strengthened, and the ranks of the regimental military police were, as a temporary measure, considerably augmented. I explain this for the benefit of my military readers, who may wonder how it was that both Smithy and Nobby Clark happened to be together on Number One post on the night of The Adjutant's Madness.

Mr Pallion recevait joyeusement à dîner ses trois assistants au Coq d'Or à Toulouse. Mais, vers 3 heures du matin, il lui revint à l'esprit qu'il n'était pas venu à Toulouse pour festoyer, mais bien pour exécuter un criminel anglais du nom de Lightman. 

- Mes enfants, dit-il gravement, quoique d'une voix un peu pâteuse, il est 3 heures, et la « Veuve » n'est pas montée ! 

Ils se rendirent tout aussitôt à la cour de la prison où se trouvait le fourgon macabre et, avec l'habileté de l'habitude, se hâtèrent d'ériger la funèbre machine et d'ajuster le couperet dans sa rainure. Mais la plus grande habileté est sujette à caution quand les vins de France entrent en jeu : en essayant de manouvrer le couperet, les aides s'aperçurent qu'il ne tombait pas comme il faut.

- Je vais arranger ça, dit Mr Pallion. 

Et il planta un clou à l'endroit précis du montant où il ne devait pas y avoir de clou. 

L'heure avançait. Les portes de la prison s'ouvrirent et le condamné fut poussé par ses gardes sur la bascule... Un bref commandement retentit. 

- Courage ! dit Mr Pallion. 

- Va au diable ! lui répondit le condamné. 

L'exécuteur pressa le bouton... et le couperet descendit..." 

Pourquoi l'ivrognerie du bourreau de Toulouse allait-elle, quelques années plus tard, déclencher la panique dans les milieux d'affaires londoniens ? Le chef inspecteut Parr et le détective privé Yale sont sur les dents : dès qu'ils avancent dans l'enquête surgit un nouveau meurtre...

Le Cercle Rouge

"Le docteur Arnold Eversham, assis devant son bureau, parcourait un livre, la tête appuyée sur sa main blanche et fine. 

La pièce était obscure. Elle était meublée d'une petite bibliothèque et d'un bureau, d'un fauteuil confortable devant une cheminée garnie de fleurs, et de deux chaises. Les murs étaient ornés de tentures de Perse, d'estampes italiennes aux cadres foncés, et de reproductions de Corot, de Van Meer, et de la Mona Lisa de Léonard de Vinci. 

Quelques coups discrets frappés à la porte, firent lever la tête au docteur. C'était un homme distingué dont les tempes grisonnantes accusaient la cinquantaine mais dont le visage aux yeux profonds avait gardé l'expression et l'éclat de la jeunesse. 

Une femme de chambre entra et lui tendit un plateau où il prit une carte. 

« Miss Gwendda Guildford... de Sacramento », lut le docteur. Après avoir réfléchi un instant, il fit introduire la visiteuse qui s'arrêta un moment sur le pas de la porte. Elle avait la grâce et la sveltesse d'une enfant et son visage, dans la pénombre, semblait annoncer une extrême jeunesse. Mais lorsque le docteur eut allumé le grand lustre, il s'aperçut que la jeune fille devait être plus âgée qu'il ne l'avait pensé tout d'abord ; le contour des lèvres était ferme, les yeux qui fixaient ceux du docteur exprimaient de la décision et de l'énergie. 

- Veuillez vous asseoir, miss Gwendda... vous venez sans doute d'arriver à Londres ?" 

Qu'est devenu Oscar Trevors ? Plus personne n'a de ses nouvelles : est-il mort ? ou fou quelque part ? Il a disparu. Mais sa nièce Gwendda reçoit une inquiétante lettre codée de sa part. Elle traverse l'Océan pour aller à Londres d'où a été postée la lettre...

Le roi de Boginda

A man stood irresolutely before the imposing portals of Cainbury House, a large office building let out to numerous small tenants, and harbouring, as the indicator on the tiled wall of the vestibule testified, some thirty different professions. The man was evidently poor, for his clothes were shabby and his boots were down at heel. He was as evidently a foreigner. His clean-shaven eagle face was sallow, his eyes were dark, his eyebrows black and straight.

He passed up the few steps into the hall and stood thoughtfully before the indicator. Presently he found what he wanted. At the very top of the list and amongst the crowded denizens of the fifth floor was a slip inscribed:

"THE GOSSIP'S CORNER"

He took from his waistcoat pocket a newspaper cutting and compared the two then stepped briskly, almost jauntily, into the hall, as though all his doubts and uncertainties had vanished, and waited for the elevator. His coat was buttoned tightly, his collar was frayed, his shirt had seen the greater part of a week's service, the Derby hat on his head had undergone extensive renovations, and a close observer would have noticed that his gloves were odd ones.

He walked into the lift and said, "Fifth floor, " with a slight foreign accent.

He was whirled up, the lift doors clanged open and the grimy finger of the elevator boy indicated the office. Again the man hesitated, examining the door carefully. The upper half was of toughened glass and bore the simple inscription:

"THE GOSSIP'S CORNER.

KNOCK."

Obediently the stranger knocked and the door opened through an invisible agent, much to the man's surprise, though there was nothing more magical about the phenomenon than there is about any electrically controlled office door.

He found himself in a room sparsely furnished with a table, a chair and a few copies of papers. An old school map of England hung on one wall and a Landseer engraving on the other. At the farthermost end of the room was another door, and to this he gravitated and again, after a moment's hesitation, he knocked.

"Come in, " said a voice.

He entered cautiously.

The room was larger and was comfortably furnished. There were shaded electric lamps on either side of the big carved oak writing-table. One of the walls was covered with books, and the litter of proofs upon the table suggested that this was the sanctorum.

The Secret House

Harlow, un dandy homme d'affaires, évolue dans le Londres de l'après première guerre mondiale, sous les yeux du détective Carlton, fin limier de Scotland Yard. La désinvolture du premier contraste avec l'abnégation du second qui s'efforce de trouver des preuves pour l'enfermer.

Un roman agréable à lire qui nous replonge avec délices dans la vie londonienne du début du XXème siècle.

Le Mystificateur

IT is not for you or me to judge Manfred and his works. I say 'Manfred', though I might as well have said 'Gonsalez', or for the matter of that 'Poiccart', since they are equally guilty or great according to the light in which you view their acts. The most lawless of us would hesitate to defend them, but the greater humanitarian could scarcely condemn them.

From the standpoint of us, who live within the law, going about our business in conformity with the code, and unquestioningly keeping to the left or to the right as the police direct, their methods were terrible, indefensible, revolting.

It does not greatly affect the issue that, for want of a better word, we call them criminals. Such would be mankind's unanimous designation, but I think-indeed, I know-that they were indifferent to the opinions of the human race. I doubt very much whether they expected posterity to honour them.

The Council of Justice

Double Dan is a 1924 crime novel by the British writer Edgar Wallace. It released in the United States under the alternative title of Diana of Kara Kara.

In 1927 it was adapted into a stage play of the same name by Wallace.

The hush of the court, which had been broken when the foreman of the jury returned their verdict, was intensified as the Judge, with a quick glance over his pince-nez at the tall prisoner, marshalled his papers with the precision and method which old men display in tense moments such as these. He gathered them together, white paper and blue and buff and stacked them in a neat heap on a tiny ledge to the left of his desk. Then he took his pen and wrote a few words on a printed paper before him.

Another breathless pause and he groped beneath the desk and brought out a small square of black silk and carefully laid it over his white wig. Then he spoke:

"James Meredith, you have been convicted after a long and patient trial of the awful crime of wilful murder. With the verdict of the jury I am in complete agreement. There is little doubt, after hearing the evidence of the unfortunate lady to whom you were engaged, and whose evidence you attempted in the most brutal manner to refute, that, instigated by your jealousy, you shot Ferdinand Bulford. The evidence of Miss Briggerland that you had threatened this poor young man, and that you left her presence in a temper, is unshaken. By a terrible coincidence, Mr. Bulford was in the street outside your fiancée's door when you left, and maddened by your insane jealousy, you shot him dead.

The Angel of Terror

C'est justement a cause du retentissement de ce cambriolage qu'il s'etait adresse encore une fois a l'As. Il avait fait passer l'annonce habituelle, dans la petite correspondance d'un journal: Perdu a Putney Commons (dans la direction de Wimbledon), jeudi soir, vers dix heures trente, un petit sac jaune contenant cinq lettres, n'ayant de valeur que pour leur proprietaire."
