Voltaire said, "Machiavelli taught Europe the art of war; it had long been practiced, without being known." For Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), war was war, and victory the supreme aim to which all other considerations must be subordinated. The Art of War is far from an anachronism—its pages outline fundamental questions that theorists of war continue to examine today, making it essential reading for any student of military history, strategy, or theory. Machiavelli believed The Art of War to be his most important work.

Un amant qui se désole, un maître peu rusé, un moine mal morigéné, un parasite, enfant gâté de la malice, voilà pour aujourd'hui votre passe-temps : c'est ainsi que Machiavel décrit les protagonistes de La Mandragore dans le prologue. Car la pièce est l'histoire d'une tromperie jouée à un maître florentin qui se croit très malin et qui, sans s'en rendre compte, se laisse entraîner dans une histoire extravagante afin que sa femme tombe enceinte... Le rythme de la pièce est parfait, l'orchestration des dialogues et de l'action gérée avec une maestria digne d'un grand metteur en scène. Dans cette comédie, qui fut représentée pour la première fois en 1520, Machiavel démontre de façon éblouissante qu'il a su s'approprier la tradition comique des auteurs latins, tels que Plaute et Térence, et la réinventer en lui imprimant un nouveau souffle. Même si le regard désenchanté et lucide de l'homme politique, celui qui notamment dans Le Prince, analysait les hommes sans complaisance, n'est pas absent.

La Mandragore

Le prince « Le Prince doit s'accommoder aux vents et aux caprices de la fortune, se maintenir dans le bien, s'il le peut, mais entrer dans le mal s'il le doit. » En 1513, Nicolas Machiavel dédie à Laurent II de Médicis un petit manuscrit. À travers ce texte, il entend transmettre au maître de Florence sa « connaissance des actions des grands hommes », fruit d'une longue expérience politique, et définir avec précision les qualités et attitudes indispensables à qui veut être prince. Dans un ouvrage prônant l'action et l'efficacité politique - qui lui vaudra d'être qualifié d'immoral -, Machiavel engage son prince à chercher le chemin de la vérité et à songer à sa prospérité.

"Der Fürst" enthält eine Anleitung zur praktischen Ausübung von Herrschaft. Machiavelli beschreibt Methoden des Machterwerbs und der Machtsicherung gegen starke Widersacher, befasst sich also mit nicht-ererbter Macht. Der "Fürst" (ital. Originaltitel: Il Principe) übt als Lehrbuch der Macht bis heute großen Einfluss auf die Politik aus.

Einige der von Niccolo Machiavelli geprägten Ratschläge haben es zu hoher Popularität gebracht. Dazu gehört die Strategie, harte und unpopuläre Maßnahmen stets an den Beginn einer Herrschaftsperiode zu legen. Dabei setzt Machiavelli auf die Vergesslichkeit der Menschen.

Kontrovers diskutiert wird Machiavellis Rat, ein Herrscher müsse für den Erfolg bereit sein, moralische Grundsätze zu opfern ("Machiavellismus"). Machiavelli berührt hier die ethische Grundfrage aller Machtausübung, ob ein Herrscher die Mittel des Bösen zur Erreichung des Guten einsetzen darf. Seine Antwort fällt eindeutig aus.

Erfolgreiche Vorgehensweisen illustriert Machiavelli am Beispiel einiger Herrscher seiner Epoche, indem er deren Erfolge und Fehler in konkreten Entscheidungssituationen aufzeigt.
