Cette synthèse, c'est Howards End qui l'opèrera, demeure imaginaire inspirée de Rooknest, la maison où Forster enfant fut si heureux, propriété où le temps est suspendu et où l'esprit de la défunte Mrs Wilcox poursuit son oeuvre conciliatrice à travers la jeune Mrs Wilcox, qui forme alliance entre les Wilcox et les Schlegel, entre l'Angleterre et l'Allemagne, entre la sensibilité et la raison. Une jeune femme anglaise est agressée dans les grottes de Marabar, une enquête s'ensuit. ce fait divers ordinaire sert de point de départ a E.M. Howards End (1910) was a story that centered on an English country house and dealt with the clash between two families, one interested in art and literature, the other only in business.
