Voici l'ultime tragédie de Shakespeare. Brecht la considérait comme « l'une des plus grandioses oeuvres » de son auteur. Cette pièce est inspirée de la vie de Gaius Marcius Coriolanus, militaire romain rendu légendaire par Plutarque.

Caius Marcius ayant capturé la ville de Corioli appartenant aux Volsques, rentre à Rome et reçoit le nom de Coriolan en honneur de ses exploits. Le Sénat lui offre un poste de consul, mais il doit, selon les coutumes, se présenter devant le peuple et demander très humblement son soutien. Malgré son mépris du système et de son arrogance, à la surprise de tous, il se prête au jeu et obtient les faveurs du public. Mais deux tribuns romains Junius Brutus et Sicinius Velutus convainquent les gens que s'il est élu, Coriolan va diriger la ville comme un tyran. Le peuple, volage, se retourne contre Coriolan et lui retire son appui. Sur les conseils de son grand ami Menenius et de sa mère Volumnia à qui il ne peut rien refuser, Coriolan retourne encore une fois devant le peuple de Rome. Les tribuns réussissent à lui faire perdre son sang-froid. En colère, Coriolan se met à insulter le peuple et cette fois il est banni de la ville. Tombé en disgrâce, il retourne chez les Volsques, chez son ennemi Aufidius qui le reçoit à bras ouverts...

William Shakespeare (1564  - 1616)   was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in   the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He sets this story in the romantic world of the Mediterranean, moving the action from Venice to the island of Cyprus and giving it an even more exotic coloring with stories of Othello's African past. Shakespeare builds so many differences into his hero and heroine—differences of race, of age, of cultural background—that one should not, perhaps, be surprised that the marriage ends disastrously. But most people who see or read the play feel that the love that the play presents between Othello and Desdemona is so strong that it would have overcome all these differences were it not for the words and actions of Othello's standard-bearer, Iago, who hates Othello and sets out to destroy him by destroying his love for Desdemona. Shakespeare a fait et refait son oeuvre. Il a écrit le premier Hamlet, à l'âge de vingt et un ans, vers 1584 ; il a écrit le second Hamlet quinze ans plus tard, vers 1600. Il a eu quinze années pour réfléchir sur les changements à apporter à son drame, avant de le livrer à la postérité sous sa forme définitive. Dans la seconde version, il rallongea certaines répliques pour davantage étoffer le caractère d'Hamlet dont le fameux To be or not to be.
La Tragique Histoire d'Hamlet, prince de Danemark (en anglais, The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark) est la plus longue et l'une des plus célèbres pièces de William Shakespeare. La date exacte de composition n'est pas connue avec précision ; la première représentation se situe sûrement entre 1598 et 1601. Le texte fut publié en 1603.
Le roi du Danemark, père d'Hamlet, est mort récemment. Son frère Claudius l'a remplacé comme roi et, moins de deux mois après, a épousé Gertrude, la veuve de son frère. Le spectre du roi apparaît alors et révèle à son fils qu'il a été assassiné par Claudius. Hamlet doit venger son père et pour mener son projet à bien simule la folie. Mais il semble incapable d'agir, et, devant l'étrangeté de son comportement, l'on en vient à se demander dans quelle mesure il a conservé sa raison. On met cette folie passagère sur le compte de l'amour qu'il porterait à Ophélie, fille de Polonius, chambellan et conseiller du roi. L'étrangeté de son comportement plonge la cour dans la perplexité. Mis en cause à mots couverts par Hamlet, Claudius perçoit le danger et décide de se débarrasser de son fantasque neveu.
