Aussi dans les quelque 600 lettres qui sont présentées ici par Carlos Baker, biographe d'Hemingway et auteur d'un essai qui fait autorité sur l'écrivain, ne faudra-t-il pas s'attendre à retrouver le styliste sobre et précis des romans et des histoires brèves ou longues : c'est plutôt, serait-on tenté de dire, un Hemingway en pantoufles qui va s'offrir au lecteur, l'homme Hemingway avec ses défauts et ses grandes qualités. Et, en un sens, ce choix de lettres est comme un autoportrait sans retouches de l'une des personnalités les plus attachantes de la littérature américaine. On le suit depuis ses débuts à dix-huit ans dans le journalisme jusqu'aux dernières semaines d'une vie dominée par le désir constant d'atteindre à la perfection dans l'écriture. Exprimé plus ou moins ouvertement, c'est d'ailleurs là le thème des nombreuses lettres qu'il adresse à James Joyce, à Scott Fitzgerald, à Gertrude Stein, à Erza Pound, à son éditeur, à Marlène Dietrich, à Gary Cooper et à tant d'autres. Quant aux lettres à ses fils et à chacune de ses quatre épouses, elles nous révèlent un homme profondément aimant et responsable, de même celles à ses amis portent la marque d'un être éminemment sociable et fidèle. Et, ce qui ne gâte rien, ces lettres sont pour la plupart extraordinairement divertissantes : pleines de spontanéité et d'humour, elles décrivent les aventures d'Ernest Hemingway dans quelque deux douzaines de pays. Ce faisant, elles nous font entrer dans les coulisses de la composition de L'adieu aux armes, de Le soleil se lève aussi ou de Pour qui sonne le glas, et, somme toute, de la majeure partie des oeuvres de fiction.

Lettres choisies 1917-1961

«Au cours de la traversée, Thomas Hudson apprit que l'enfer ne ressemble pas nécessairement à ce qu'a décrit Dante ou l'un des grands peintres de l'enfer, mais qu'il pouvait être un bateau confortable, agréable et très apprécié, vous emportant vers un pays dont vous vous êtes toujours approché avec impatience. Il avait plusieurs cercles, et ils n'étaient pas formés comme ceux du grand égotiste florentin. Il pensait que sur le bateau il pourrait parvenir à un accommodement avec la douleur, ne sachant pas encore qu'il n'y a pas d'accommodement avec la douleur.» Les trois récits qui composent Îles à la dérive furent publiés à titre posthume. On y rencontre Thomas Hudson, peintre et double de l'auteur, dans une partie de pêche avec ses enfants, puis à Cuba durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en mer enfin chassant les sous-marins allemands. L'histoire d'un homme pour qui la vie, faite de combats, de tournées dans les bars et de souffrance, est l'envers de la création.

In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight," For Whom the Bell Tolls. The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. "If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote to Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it."
