Trois scientifiques reprennent la plume vingt ans après un premier essai sur l'Évolution pour actualiser les données dans des domaines où la recherche s'est révélée féconde et les avancées nombreuses. Par ce travail original - puisqu'il propose une synthèse scientifique rigoureuse en même temps qu'une approche philosophique et une réflexion religieuse -, les auteurs contribuent à clarifier le débat au moment où des courants de pensée tendent à brouiller les plans. En effet, tandis que des théories néodarwiniennes développent une vision matérialiste sans nuance de la nature humaine, un courant " fondamentaliste " chrétien nie l'Évolution et un courant de pensée " néocréationniste " tente de prouver scientifiquement un " dessein intelligent " qui serait la prédestination de l'univers à voir apparaître l'homme.
