His first notable work, "Down and Out in Paris and London", was published in 1933, recounting his experiences among the working class and homeless. However, it was Orwell's dystopian novels that catapulted him to literary fame. "Animal Farm, " published in 1945, is a satirical allegory that critiques the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism. In 1949, he released his magnum opus, "Nineteen Eighty-Four, " which portrayed a nightmarish future under a totalitarian regime, coining terms like "Big Brother" and "thoughtcrime" that have become part of popular culture. Orwell's writing style is marked by its clarity and social commentary. Insurance salesman George "Fatty" Bowling lives with his humorless wife and their two irritating children in a dull house in a tract development in the historyless London suburb of West Bletchley. The year is 1938; doomsayers are declaring that England will be at war again by 1941. When George bets on an unlikely horse and wins, he finds himself with a little extra cash on his hands. What should he spend it on? "The alternatives, it seemed to me, were either a week-end with a woman or dribbling it quietly away on odds and ends such as cigars and double whiskeys." But a chance encounter with a poster in Charing Cross sets him off on a tremendous journey into his own memories--memories, especially, of a boyhood spent in Lower Binfield, the country village where he grew up. Le passé a été oblitéré et réinventé, et les événements les plus récents sont susceptibles d’être modifiés. Winston est lui-même chargé de récrire les archives qui contredisent le présent et les promesses de Big Brother. Grâce à une technologie de pointe, ce dernier sait tout, voit tout. Il n’est pas une âme dont il ne puisse connaître les pensées. On ne peut se fier à personne et les enfants sont encore les meilleurs espions qui soient. Liberté est Servitude. Ignorance est Puissance. Telles sont les devises du régime de Big Brother. La plupart des Océaniens n’y voient guère à redire, surtout les plus jeunes qui n’ont pas connu l’époque de leurs grands-parents et le sens initial du mot "libre". Winston refuse cependant de perdre espoir. Il entame une liaison secrète et hautement dangereuse avec l’insoumise Julia et tous deux vont tenter d’intégrer la Fraternité, une organisation ayant pour but de renverser Big Brother. Mais celui-ci veille…

L'histoire : Dans le futur, le monde a été divisé en trois empires qui se combattent en permanence : L'Océanie, l'Asie de l'Est et l'Eurasie. 1984 se passe à Londres, dans l'Océanie, une dictature. Winston Smith est le personnage principal du roman, un agent du Parti qui travaille au ministère de la Vérité. Son travail consiste à réécrire les articles de presse et modifier les données de l'État afin que tout correspondent à la vision du Parti unique. Big Brother est le chef invisible du Parti, mais ses portraits sont partout. Chacun est constamment surveillé, d'où le slogan " Big Brother vous regarde ". Trois slogans sont omniprésents : " La guerre c'est la paix ", " La liberté c'est l'esclavage ", " L'ignorance c'est la force " ; quatre ministères l'organisent - Vérité, Paix, Amour, Abondance -, et la population est répartie en trois classes - le Parti intérieur (les dirigeants), le Parti extérieur (ceux qui servent le pouvoir), et les prolétaires. 

" Dans cette contre-utopie cinglante, Orwell propose une réflexion sur la ruine de l'homme par la confiscation de la pensée et la prolifération de la technocratie ". Cette vision du futur est elle improbable ? A vous d'en juger...
