In the year 1843 I shipped as "ordinary seaman" on board of a United States frigate then lying in a harbor of the Pacific Ocean. After remaining in this frigate for more than a year, I was discharged from the service upon the vessel's arrival home. My man-of-war experiences and observations have been incorporated in the present volume.

Les thèmes existentiels de ses romans d’aventures y sont transposés, avec une tension comparable, dans la simple histoire de la vie d’un employé. Ce texte bref, mais aux significations inépuisables, a exercé une fascination durable sur des écrivains et philosophes comme Maurice Blanchot, Georges Bataille, Michel Foucault ou Gilles Deleuze. L’un des mérites de cette nouvelle traduction est de faire ressortir une qualité du texte quelque peu occultée : son humour.

Herman Melville s'est inspiré, pour écrire Benito Cereno, d'un fait divers : des esclaves noirs, transportés à bord d'un galion espagnol, s'étaient révoltés, avaient massacré les Blancs, à l'exception du commandant, Don Benito Cereno, et de quelques matelots qu'il fallait épargner pour pouvoir être ramenés en Afrique. À court de vivre et d'eau et contraints de toucher à un petit port du Chili, ils avaient forcé Don Benito à feindre d'être resté le maître à bord, eux-mêmes demeurant apparemment ses esclaves soumis, et le Nègre Babo jouant auprès de lui, pour le surveiller étroitement, le rôle du serviteur personnel plein de zèle lors de son entretien avec le capitaine Delano. Celui-ci, en effet, mouillé dans le port et voyant ce navire évidemment désemparé, était venu lui offrir son aide. Mais il avait éprouvé à son bord un sentiment croissant d'étrangeté et de malaise, jusqu'au moment où un coup de théâtre - le saut de Don Benito par-dessus bord - avait révélé le véritable état des choses. De ce fait divers, le talent de Melville a fait une parabole, celle de l'ambiguïté foncière où est piégée l'infime condition humaine.

MOBY DICK

Widely considered one of the great American novels, Herman Melville’s masterpiece went largely unread during his lifetime and was out of print at the time of his death in 1891. I have known very many of them, professionally and privately, and if I pleased, could relate divers histories, at which good-natured gentlemen might smile, and sentimental souls might weep. But I waive the biographies of all other scriveners for a few passages in the life of Bartleby, who was a scrivener of the strangest I ever saw or heard of.
