Le jeune Thésée quitte sa cité natale pour faire ses preuves comme héros et rejoindre, incognito, son père le roi Egée. Mais arrivé à Athènes il apprend l'immense tribut qui pèse sur la ville et ses habitants : chaque année des jeunes gens sont envoyés au roi Minos qui les livre en pâture au Minotaure. Thésée se porte volontaire et se joint à eux : il veut délivrer Athènes de son lourd fardeau. Il fera la rencontre de la fille aînée de Minos, Ariane, qui l'aidera, par amour, à sortir vivant de cette épreuve et s'enfuira avec lui. Il fallait la fougue et l'ampleur du grand compositeur Beethoven pour rendre compte de toute la dramaturgie du mythe de Thésée ! Une nouvelle façon de découvrir ce génie qui fête ses 250 ans cette année.

Beethovens Variationen über Volksweisen für Klavier allein oder mit Begleitung einer Flöte (Sechs variierte Themen op. 105 und Zehn variierte Themen op. 107) stehen, obgleich Spätwerke, in der Tradition der frühklassischen Kompositionen für ein Melodieinstrument und Klavier, bei denen das Klavier dominierte und dem Melodieinstrument die begleitende Rolle zukam. Dementsprechend sind die technischen Ansprüche für die Flöte eher zurückhaltend. Aber auch der Klavierpart zeigt, dass es Beethoven - ähnlich wie in seinen Bagatellen - verstand, durchaus auch für musikalische Liebhaber zu schreiben. Auch die Ansprüche der Klavierstimme gehen nur selten über einen mittleren Schwierigkeitsgrad hinaus. Vom kompositorischen Gehalt dagegen stehen die Stücke auf hohem Niveau. Gerade dies - anspruchsvolle Musikalität bei nur mittleren spieltechnischen Schwierigkeiten - dürfte auch für den heutigen "Liebhaber" von Interesse sein und zum gemeinsamen Musizieren anregen. Zudem finden Liebhaber wie professionelle Interpreten in der Ausgabe der Wiener Urtext Edition erstmals einen von lange überlieferten Fehlern und willkürlichen Zusätzen gereinigten Notentext.
