Nous sommes en 1836 et cette femme quitte la ferme familiale avec ses deux fils pour retrouver sa fille partie en ville pour travailler. Mais tout ceci a mal tourné et elle s'est fait renvoyée. Depuis deux ans, la famille est sans nouvelle car le père a immédiatement renié sa fille. Extrait : -- Oh ! mon garçon, dit-elle d'une voix suppliante en se retournant vers lui, il faut que j'aille chercher ma Lisette. Je ne puis rester ici en repos, je pense trop à elle. Bien des fois, j'ai laissé ton père dans son lit, dormant tranquillement, pour aller à la fenêtre et regarder de toutes mes forces du côté de Manchester ; il me semblait quelquefois que j'allais partir et marcher à travers les bruyères jusqu'à la ville ; et puis que je relèverais toutes les têtes baissées, jusqu'à ce que j'aie trouvé notre Lisette. Souvent, souvent, quand le vent soufflait doucement dans le creux de la bruyère, je me suis figuré (c'était seulement une idée, tu sais bien), que je l'entendais m'appeler, et que la voix se rapprochait, se rapprochait ; je finissais par croire que je l'entendais sangloter à la porte et murmurer : « Ma mère ! » je suis descendue bien des fois tout doucement, j'ai ouvert la porte et j'ai regardé dans les ténèbres, croyant l'apercevoir ; et puis je suis rentrée désolée en n'entendant rien que le souffle du vent. North and South is a social novel published in 1854 by English writer Elizabeth Gaskell.

With Wives and Daughters (1865) and Cranford (1853), it is one of her best-known novels and was adapted for television three times (1966, 1975 and 2004).

The later version renewed interest in the novel and attracted a wider readership.
