With a history going back to 1137, the Palace of Fontainebleau was home to France's sovereigns until the fall of the Second Empire in 1870. Although lived in for only a few months each year, it was constantly embellished, and now is a veritable lesson in the history of architecture and interior decoration, from the Renaissance to the late 19th century. A consummate incarnation of the French spirit, down the centuries this venerable dwelling was a formidable breeding ground for innovation in the arts.
